INFORMATION ABOUT THE BERLIN OVERNIGHT TAX
CITY TAX
On 1st of January 2014, an accommodation tax, the so-called “City Tax“, was adopted by the Berlin Senate. The Berlin City Tax must be paid for bookings made from the 1st of January 2014 and affects all private [non-business] hotel stays. The City Tax amounts to 5 % of the room rate (net price) excluding VAT and fees for amenities and services. The tax is collected by us and paid to the relevant government department. Business travelers are exempt from the City Tax. Therefore, we need to know the purpose of your trip. All you need to do is to complete the registration card during check in. We are kindly asking you to understand that it is our duty to levy the tax in order to fulfill the requirements of the City Tax.
Generally it means:
- We, as a hotel, must clarify the purpose of your trip-if it is private or business. Should the relevant information be not provided, the accommodation is assessed as private.
- You can prove the business purpose of your trip. It can be verified by a bill that is paid by or issued to the employer, or a letter from the company. The private entrepreneurs and the owners of the companies can return the tax their selves when providing the evidence of the business purpose of the trip.
- In case of a private trip, the tax will be added to the hotel bill. As a hotel, we have no influence on the extra costs mentioned and responsible to the Senate.
